
Executive functions allow children to attend, hold information in mind, plan, organise, and manage their emotions, in order to get something done.
Some children experience particular difficulties with:
- adequately maintaining attention
- remembering what they are supposed to be doing
- sitting still
- getting started on tasks
- managing their time
- regulating emotional reactions
- transitioning (e.g. changing activities)
- planning and organising.
Assessment can assist in clarifying which areas of executive functioning your child struggles with when compared with other children their age, and allow for provision of recommendations to support your child both at school and at home.
If your child displays a persistent pattern of inattention and / or hyperactivity in two or more environments, which interferes with their learning and other areas of functioning, they may have Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). ADHD may co-occur with other conditions including anxiety, and specific learning disorders.
Assessment includes assessment of inattention and hyperactivity, as well as factors such as anxiety, low mood, withdrawal, and social skills, when compared with peers.
